Xena: The Warrior Princess!

All this talk about souls and the afterlife makes me think of Xena: The Warrior Princess! Xena has a few episodes that mention souls. In one episode, Xena and Gabrielle find out that their souls are connected in every life that they live. In a few others, Xena and Gabrielle fight Alti who wishes to end their reincarnation cycles permanently and rid of both their souls. In other episodes, Xena uses her soul and others to fight Alti in the spirit world.

In one episode Gabrielle says something to a friend that I find very interesting. This story is taken from Plato’s Symposium. She says, “Once, a long, long time ago, all people had four legs and two heads. And then, the Gods threw down thunderbolts, and split everyone into two. Each half then had two legs, and one head. But the separation left both sides with a desperate yearning to be reunited, because they shared the same soul. And ever since then, all people spend their lives searching for the other half of their soul.” Something to think about!

One thing I like about Xena is the show’s view on death. One would think that the only thing the show would encompass is Tartarus and the Elysian Fields since it is a show based on Greek mythology, but this is not the case. Xena combines all cultures, and has Tartarus and the Elysian Fields, but also Heaven, Hell, and reincarnation. In one episode when Xena thinks Gabrielle has died, she goes to Hades and asks if she went to him since she was Greek. In this episode Xena mentions that different cultures have different beliefs in the afterlife and finds out that Amazon women don’t go to Hades. In another episode, Xena and Gabrielle find out what happens to them in future lives. This is what I hope happens when people die, that way every culture is satisfied!
