Souls are a created idea that everyone has an iner essence to them and that essences will live on after you die. For cristanity this is going to heaven or hell. a lot of religons have expermented with the idea of souls over the years.
the reality of it is no one really want to think that nothing is going to happen when you die. it's disheartening to think such. No one wants to think that when you die thats it, it's the end, no nothing. so the concept of a soul came in to mind that when you die this thing in you that contains all that you are will just live on. it's a way for people to better exept fate and come to terms with the fact that they are going to die. cuz hey dying wouldn't be that bad if you could just go chill in heaven afterward.
weather souls exist or not im not sure. i want them to be real for the same exact reasons stated above. but when it comes down to it the word soul has just come to mean in our society some ones very essence, what makes them them.
