Destiny: a glittering trail of fluff or DOOM?

When I think of destiny I think of a set ultimate end; there are many different choices one can make through life, but in the end they end up somewhere pre determined. Whether or not I believe this so called destiny exists, I'm not sure. All I know is that in the end I'm going to die, so none of it really matters anyway.

BUT, when thinking about destiny as pre determined life, I wondered if there are only a select few who have these so called destinies. Are they something we're born with, or does an event have to happen to create it? Take my good friend Harry Potter for example, was it in his life plan to have his parents die when he was but a year old, or was his destiny created after the fact? Because once this event happened, he was raised for the sole purpose of killing Lord Voldemort.

Maybe only super special people have destinies, and the rest of us are just running around with no purpose. I think I rather like not having the responsibility to do something meaningful, I can be selfish and just enjoy my time on Earth with all you folks; sounds good. But if a select few of those special people with ultimate destinies are found in this class, I wish you all the best.

This whole thing is just a tangled mess of confusion, who knows what to believe anymore? I mean, I just learned Santa was abused by creepy elves!

Love in Harry Potter

This is what Albus Dumbledore has to say about love: "There is a room in the Department of Mysteries that is kept locked at all times. It contains a force that is at once more wonderful and more terrible than death, than human intelligence, than the forces of nature. It is also, perhaps, the most mysterious of the many subjects for study that reside there. It is the power held within that room that you possess in such quantities and which Voldemort has not at all."

Love is an important topic in Harry Potter, and is considered the most powerful magic. Harry is protected by other peoples’ love for him and his ability to love. A lot of people think they are in love, but all they are is infatuated. This brings me to Harry Potter again in the form of a love potion. Love potions make people think that they are in love, but they are just infatuated. If you ever believe you are in love, just see if your feelings last a few months, otherwise you are only infatuated.

I refuse to believe there is anything “magical” about love. Love to me is just brain chemistry set about to uphold the survival of the species.

SO, as some of you may know I like to find intertwining events, theories, names, really anything, that associates with Harry Potter. For this post I would like to point out the similarities and differences between Daemons and Patronuses.

First, Daemons. They are a manifestation of ones own soul there to guide you through life and help make decisions; they are a life long companion that if hurt/killed affects you in the same manner. They do behave in ways that are independent of their human and are usually the opposite gender. When separated it's as if your soul has been ripped out. When you become an adult or go through a life changing experience, your daemon will settle on an animal form that represents and defines you.

Now for the Patronuses. When you conjure a patronus it forms into animal or creature that often represents you or your deepest inner feelings. They are unique to their person and represent a part of them. I was very much reminded of patronuses when reading about deamons, but for the similarities I've found, there are also many differences. Patronuses do not have a metaphysical bond to the conjured; if it gets hit or cursed away, nothing will directly happen to the wizard and they could just as easily conjure it again. Patronuses don't neccesarily settle; yes they usually keep the same form, but they can change do to strong feelings or a life changing event (Tonk's patronus changed into a Werewolf form when she was in love with Lupin). This also backs up the fact that the patronus doesn't DEFINE the person, it just portrays certain feelings and characteristics of the person.

Lies I Tell You!

There were a lot of thoughts running through my head in class today about the Theories of Truth. One of the things discussed was inter-subjectivity; if we all believe something to be true together, then it is.

I say NO.

I like to think that everyone has their own reality; yes we interact with each other and often come to the same consensus, but I ask you, is it really the same? What if what I see as the color blue, you see as my version of red? We would both identify the color as blue, but it would really be different. If I were to describe my reality to you it would sound exactly the same, but the meanings of the words used could be completely different; you would think we see the same things in the same way, but they could be completely DISCOMBOBULATED!

What if you don't even exist? All of you are just people I created that I interact with; that's right, it's all about me. You would of course disagree and might even possibly think No Jordan, it's all about me, YOU and the rest of the world are simply characters I have placed in MY world; MY reality. Well my friends, classmates, beings of the Universe...we are all wrong.

The truth is, Harry Potter rules the Universe.
